ABOUT US

Niselo started as a project to serve a need. It was Initially developed by a group of researchers from the Tswane University of Technology seeking to overcome problems caused by malnutrition. Looking towards a sustainable and innovative solution, the researchers turned to the sorghum plant.


Although initially perceived as a low class crop due to antiquated ideas of local plants being considered lesser and imported goods a luxury, with the support of the healthy/organic movement  a renewed interest and revival in looking towards  the health benefits of local foods has renewable and sustainable sources of high value organic food. 


Looking over the Pretoria CBD and blue collar workers commuting to and fro the city at early and late hours there was a need for a nutritious, high quality, locally produced product that could serve the needs of the people.  Initially introduced to blue collar commuting hubs such as Marabastad taxi rank, Bosman taxi rank and Struben street - Niselo in its early stages became a hit for locals.

Because nutrition matters…


Poor nutrition impacts on quality of life and human development. It leads to 20% of deaths globally and thus is the leading cause of premature death. Poor nutrition leads to poor education outcomes in children, poor productivity in the workforce and affects economic development nationally and globally. Poor nutrition results from reduced access to affordable, healthy, nutritious food.


At Nutrigo, a spin-out from Tshwane University of Technology, we research, formulate and market affordable nutritious foods based on unique African ingredients. Our main product is Niselo which is a probiotic – enriched ready-to-drink non-dairy yoghurt. It is high in protein, fibre and anti-oxidants and contains no lactose or gluten. It is unique in being a cereal-based drink containing probiotics and prebiotics thus serving not only as highly nutritious meal replacement but also a convenient reday to use food/drink on the go. It is particularly suited to busy people who need to energy (e.g. miners), convalescent patients needing nourishment and young children and students. Niselo comes in 500 ml bottles and 250 ml sachets. It is manufactured at our Pretoria facility where we have capacity to manufacture 500 L batches at every production run.
